Description

The probably piscivorous pterosaur Campylognathoides showing the colorful markings I imagine these animals had, and a covering of soft fuzz. There's no reason to draw them as scaly, ugly or lizard-like.

The smaller species C. liasicus had a wingspan of about 90 cm, being similar in size with the familiar Black-headed gull Chroicocephalus (Larus) ridibundus. The larger C. zitteli is closer in size to the Great Black-backed Gull Larus marinus with a wingspan of 175 cm. Campylognathoides might have been similar to gulls in their habits, too. I imagine them as generalists less specialized in piscivory than the fanged relative Dorygnathus. Campylognathoides might have eaten mostly fish, but also things like insects, worms and small land animals and lived in many different habitats.

Coming back to this guy, I imagine Padian (diet) and Witton (flight style and ability to lift food items into the air) are both partly correct (in the hyphenated ideas).

I don’t really buy the idea this animal was a generalist. Between its robust forelimbs and the longest (proportionately) fourth finger of any pterosaur, its anatomy seems hyperspecialized for fast, flapping flight (think falcons), and all the generalists I can think of (animals like corvids) aren’t really adapted for this type of flight.
