Brush pen Hippidion

Description

I'm still working on a big set of extinct equids, but in the meanwhile, have this little Hippidion principale with a brush pen and some markers (and Photoshop for colour). It's heavily inspired by a tiny, scruffy, bearded pony that lives at a stable nearby. He looks like a feral thing that sneaked in among the bigger, more gracile animals.

Hippidion was native to South America, and the last member of the horse family that was not an entirely specialized grass-eater. According to an isotope analysis, Hippidion was a mixed feeder: some grass, but also leaves, branches, perhaps some fruit and berries too. This is why I gave it, in this reconstruction, a muscular hooked lip like a black rhinoceros. Hippidions unique nasal anatomy could have also housed something else: a big, moose-like nose as in my previous reconstruction, perhaps even a small trunk like a tapirs'. It's all within plausible speculation, since mummified specimens or cave art depicting the nose have not been found so far.

Looks indeed very odd for a horse. Nice work!
