Pyrenean Desman (Galemys pyrenaicus), the weird aquatic mammal living only in a small patch of coastal and mountain streams around the borders of France, Spain and Portugal. Despite living in Europe, by far the best researched continent in terms of biodiversity, very little is known of this nocturnal and elusive creature. It is known, though, that it's no shrew, even though it looks a bit like one. Instead, it's closely related to moles.
It's the first of a series of weekly bioillustration things I'm making for my blog (for the time being, in Finnish only. Sorry.)
The other option, given we want our names to apply to monophyletic groups, is to call the whole Soricomorpha "shrews", including moles and solenodons. I don't know which would be better, but I'd personally prefer the former option.
I've been fascinated by these little guys ever since I read about them in a nature magazine - that failed to provide an illustration of what they actually looked like. Fun times.
